With a career built on solving complex challenges, Molycop Senior Process Engineer Cesar Poma helps mining operations unlock efficiency, sustainability and performance through data-driven innovation in mineral processing.
Key Facts
- With over 14 years’ experience in grinding and flotation optimisation, Cesar brings customers a broad, integrated approach to mineral processing challenges.
- Cesar specialises in turning complex operational problems into practical, data-driven solutions that deliver measurable improvements in efficiency and sustainability.
- Molycop empowers customers to optimise grinding performance with real-time monitoring tools like MillSlicer VIP, delivering measurable gains in throughput, efficiency and liner life.
A career built on challenge and improvement
From the beginning, Cesar was drawn to the mining industry for the challenges it presented.I chose this sector precisely because of its demands – both physical and mental. I wanted to improve the way things are done and contribute to processes becoming more efficient, sustainable and competitive.
Throughout his career, he has led improvement projects from concept to final implementation, encompassing laboratory testing, scaling, industrial trials and the delivery of full solutions. These experiences have not only strengthened his technical skills but also instilled a mindset of continuous improvement.
His work in both milling and flotation optimisation gave him a broad, integrated view of mineral processing, preparing him to generate solutions that deliver real value for customers.
“At Molycop, my focus is on driving operational improvements that help our clients achieve their objectives more efficiently – positioning mining as a benchmark for operational excellence.”
Turning customer challenges into solutions
At the core of Cesar’s role at Molycop is understanding customer needs and translating them into effective, data-driven solutions.“My role centres on generating solutions, bringing value through proposals based on data and aligned with strategic goals.”
In grinding, where only 3–5% of energy is used effectively, the stakes are high.
Grinding is one of the least efficient processes in mining, which makes it a critical area for innovation. Optimising energy use and applying advanced process control can deliver substantial improvements in efficiency, sustainability and profitability.
Real-time monitoring tools such as MillSlicer VIP are central to this work. By providing high-precision, real-time insights into mill conditions, operators can reduce variability, make informed decisions and enhance throughput and efficiency.
Sharing knowledge with the industry
On 13 October 2025 at 9am (Peru time), Cesar will present a special Molycop Insights webinar titled SAG Mill Optimisation with MillSlicer VIP. This 45-minute session will explore how real-time monitoring transforms SAG/AG mill performance, enabling operators to:- improve throughput and efficiency
- measure key parameters such as mill volume, steel charge %, toe angle and liner impacts
- protect liners and optimise speed with real-time ball striking position data
- enhance mill feed control
- use historical vibration data to estimate liner and bearing wear.
“In mineral processing, efficiency and sustainability are no longer optional. Our challenge as process engineers is to optimise operations with innovative solutions that generate value and reduce environmental impact.”
This webinar, delivered in Spanish, is designed for process engineers, metallurgists, plant managers and operations teams seeking to drive continuous improvement in mill performance.
Beyond the plant
Away from the challenges of plant optimisation, Cesar finds balance and energy through sport.“Running outdoors and playing football are the best ways to disconnect and recharge. Striking a balance between work and wellbeing makes all the difference.”
He also offers advice for young professionals looking to build a career in mineral processing:
“Change is the only constant – never stop learning and adapting. Knowledge is the key to staying relevant and leading in any environment.”
