Molycop Masterclass series: Turn theory into throughput

At Molycop's Kalgoorlie Masterclass, Rick Dunn and other Molycop experts will show how core milling principles – such as ball size, charge volume and mill speed – can translate into real-world gains in efficiency, throughput and recovery.

Key Facts

  • Molycop’s Kalgoorlie Masterclass (16 October 2025) will focus on milling fundamentals, grinding media performance and best practice in plant trial design. Six AusIMM PD hours are on offer.
  • The Bendigo Masterclass (22 October 2025) will explore the Laws of Comminution and how to use a Ball Mill Simulator to increase throughput rate and milling efficiency. Three AusIMM PD hours are on offer.
  • Both training sessions will provide practical, site-relevant learning from Molycop experts designed to turn theory into measurable operational impact.
For Rick Dunn, Technical Services Manager for Grinding Media, technical support isn’t just about solving immediate problems – it’s about helping customers understand the fundamentals of milling and giving them the confidence to apply that knowledge on site. Together with his team of applications engineers, Rick provides hands-on guidance to ensure customers get measurable results from their grinding operations.

“Technical services is about more than answering questions – it’s about standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our customers,” Rick explains. “Our applications engineers work side by side with plant teams to interpret data, run trials and make sure every recommendation translates into something that improves performance on the ground.”

Practical learning for real sites

At the Molycop Masterclass in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, on 16 October 2025, Rick and members of his Applications team will guide participants through the fundamentals of milling performance, the critical influence of grinding media and how to design and analyse plant trials. These sessions are designed to take concepts that are often viewed as theory and show how they directly impact real-world plant performance.

The fundamentals of comminution – things like ball size, charge volume and mill speed – can sound basic. But understanding their combined impact is critical. Small changes to these parameters can shift throughput, energy use and even recovery rates. Our goal in Kalgoorlie is to bring those fundamentals to life, so participants can go back to site and make confident, data-backed decisions.

The value of plant trials

One of Rick’s priorities is ensuring trials are designed to deliver meaningful insights. “Anyone can run a trial,” he explains. “The difference is in how you design it, what you measure, and how you interpret the results. A well-executed trial can give you a roadmap to optimise performance and avoid costly mistakes.”

At the Kalgoorlie Masterclass, Rick and his team will demonstrate best practice in trial design, highlight common pitfalls and show participants how to collect and interpret data that leads to better operational outcomes.

Technical services as a partnership

For Rick, the role of Technical Services goes far beyond equipment and analytics. It’s about building trust and creating long-term value. “We’re not just a supplier – we’re a partner,” he says. “That means understanding each site’s unique challenges and tailoring our support to fit. Every ore body and every circuit is different, and our team works to make sure solutions are practical and site-relevant.”

The Masterclass, Rick believes, is also an opportunity to strengthen relationships. “These events aren’t one-way presentations – they’re conversations,” he adds. “We want participants to share their experiences and challenges. That exchange of knowledge is just as valuable as the technical content.”

Building on a global foundation

The Kalgoorlie Masterclass builds on the success of the Molycop Masterclass held in Indonesia, which brought in-person, applied learning to hundreds of participants. For Rick and his team of applications engineers, it offered proof that combining technical depth with hands-on learning delivers lasting impact.

Globally, we’ve seen that people are hungry for this kind of training. When they leave a Masterclass, they’re not just more informed – they’re more confident. They know how to take action back at site.

Masterclass opportunities in Bendigo

Following the Kalgoorlie event, Molycop will host a Masterclass in Bendigo, Victoria, on 22 October 2025. This event, held just before MetFest Victoria, will focus on the Laws of Comminution and include a practical display of the Molycop Tools Ball Mill Simulator.

Participants will explore the pioneering work of Von Rittinger, Kick and Bond, before applying their theories in a simulated milling environment to see how throughput and efficiency can be improved. Presenters Giehard Nebre and Sean Mee will guide attendees through the concepts and applications involved.

Register now

The Molycop Masterclass in Kalgoorlie takes place on 16 October 2025 at Curtin University’s WASM Campus. Both it and the Bendigo Masterclass will give participants the opportunity to learn directly from Molycop’s technical experts, gain practical skills and log valuable Professional Development (PD) hours with AusIMM.

Participants at the Kalgoorlie Masterclass can earn six AusIMM PD hours, while those at the Bendigo Masterclass can earn three PD hours.

“Technical services is about delivering impact,” Rick concludes. “And the Masterclass is one of the best ways we can share that impact with our partners.”

Register today to secure your place at the Kalgoorlie or Bendigo Masterclass and take advantage of the opportunity to learn from Molycop’s global experts.
