Senior Metallurgist supports customers and leads innovation in Mexico

Molycop Senior Metallurgist Luis Lozano works with Molycop customers to drive measurable improvements in performance, recovery and efficiency.

Key Facts

  • Luis helped a customer achieve a measurable recovery gain in a molybdenum flotation circuit through targeted microbubble technology trials.
  • By applying Molycop Tools, Luis transforms complex plant data into clear, actionable insights for continuous process optimisation.
  • With Molycop’s high chrome grinding media and tailored technical service, Luis and the Mexico team deliver solutions that balance quality, innovation and measurable value.
At the heart of Molycop’s operations in Mexico is a team dedicated to delivering more than just products. Among them is Luis Lozano, Senior Metallurgist, whose career reflects both a passion for the mineral processing industry and a commitment to supporting customers with data-driven solutions.

A strong technical foundation

Luis’s journey began at the Universidad de Guanajuato, where he studied Metallurgical Engineering. His early career as a Control Room Supervisor at Minera Boleo gave him practical experience in plant operations. But it was his exposure to Molycop Tools during university – using spreadsheets in his Process Simulation class – that sparked his interest in Molycop’s approach to combining technical expertise with practical mining solutions.

“Since college, I was familiar with the Molycop brand and the value it brought to mineral processing. Joining the company felt like a natural step,” Luis recalls.

Supporting customers in Mexico

Luis has been a member of the Molycop team for five years, during which time he has developed both his technical and soft skills. Every day is varied in his role as Applications Engineer. From analysing operational data and running plant trials to preparing recommendations and presenting solutions, his focus is clear: helping customers overcome their challenges.

Luis explains:

Every customer is different, which means we face new problems regularly. Overcoming them gives me valuable experience and keeps my role dynamic.
His responsibilities span grinding and flotation processes, where he identifies bottlenecks, optimises plant performance and ensures rigorous quality control. By combining statistical analysis with hands-on testing, Luis provides actionable insights that translate into measurable results.

One standout project involved evaluating microbubble generation in a molybdenum flotation circuit. The trial delivered a measurable recovery improvement, prompting the customer to implement the technology across their entire operation. “Results like this build confidence and show how technical service adds value beyond just supplying products,” he says.

Mexico’s importance

Mexico’s mining industry is both diverse and dynamic, making it a critical market for Molycop. Luis believes the company’s reputation in the region stems from its product quality and the partnership approach it takes with customers.

According to Luis:

Molycop’s true differentiator is finding the right balance between high-quality products and technical expertise. Customers trust us because we adapt solutions to their specific conditions and focus on measurable improvements.
With recent expansions to its product catalogue – most notably the introduction of High Chrome (HiCr) balls – Molycop continues to strengthen its presence, delivering improved performance and cost-effective solutions to customers across the country.

Innovation and data-driven solutions

For Luis, innovation is not an abstract concept; it is an integral part of daily operations. “Anything that can be controlled must first be measured,” he explains.

Mining plants generate millions of data points every minute, and by applying advanced data analytics, Luis and his team can pinpoint root causes of inefficiencies and design tailored solutions.

Whether using simulation platforms such as Molycop Tools, MillTraj, or Rocky DEM, or applying advanced statistical models to validate results, Luis ensures recommendations are grounded in both science and practicality.

Looking ahead

The future holds exciting opportunities for both Luis and Molycop in Mexico. He is working toward presenting a technical paper at a mining congress and further strengthening his expertise in advanced data analytics. And he sees Molycop playing an increasingly important role in supporting Mexico’s shift toward data-driven and sustainable mining practices.

While much of his time is spent in the field or behind datasets, Luis also has an eye on broader knowledge sharing. “I’d like to engage more with the industry outside customer sites,” he says, teasing the possibility of hosting a Molycop Insights webinar in the new year to share his expertise with a broader audience.

A passion for people and progress

What drives Luis is clear: working directly with customers, tackling new challenges and seeing the results of collaboration. Supported by a strong, customer-focused team in Mexico, he continues to deliver value that goes far beyond the supply of grinding media and flotation solutions.

At Molycop, people like Luis embody the company’s philosophy of ‘Progress Together’, building trust, applying innovation and ensuring customers in Mexico and beyond have the tools, data and expertise they need to succeed.
