Forging Australia’s rail future: A conversation with Gregor Dalziel, Comsteel GM – Rail

Molycop’s Comsteel brand will showcase more than a century of Australian rail manufacturing excellence at this year’s AusRAIL PLUS conference in Melbourne, Australia.

Key Facts

  • Comsteel delivers sovereign rail wheel and axle forging capability, giving operators confidence in resilient, locally manufactured products.
  • Ongoing investment through Molycop strengthens product quality, technical expertise and supply reliability for rail customers nationwide.
  • From nurturing new industry talent to collaborating across government and suppliers, Comsteel is committed to building a modern, reliable and proudly Australian rail network.
At AusRAIL 2025 in Melbourne, Molycop will showcase the strength of its Australian rail manufacturing capability through its Comsteel brand. Comsteel has been a trusted name in rail wheels and forged rail products for more than a century.

To mark the occasion, we spoke with Gregor Dalziel, General Manager – Rail, about Comsteel’s heritage, its role within the Molycop portfolio and the importance of talent, capability and partnership in shaping the future of Australia’s rail industry.

“We’re a global business with a local heartbeat,” says Gregor Dalziel, Comsteel General Manager – Rail.

An Australian brand with a national role

For Gregor, Comsteel’s legacy of manufacture in Australia over the last 100 years carries significant weight:

Comsteel is more than a product line – it’s a national capability. Being manufactured in Australia matters. It means resilience, quality and the confidence that our rail networks can rely on locally made wheels and axle forgings.
As part of the Molycop portfolio, Comsteel has invested in modernisation, innovation and technical expertise to stay ahead of industry demand.

“We’re a global business with a local heartbeat,” Gregor says. “The Comsteel brand gives Australia something very few countries have – sovereign rail wheel manufacturing.”

Forged and rolled railway wheels are produced to International Standards for all classes of rolling stock.

Comsteel rail products are the only Australian-manufactured rail wheels for passenger, locomotive and heavy haul trains.

Supporting the next generation of rail talent

This year, Molycop will again sponsor the Women in Rail Scholarship, an initiative designed to elevate emerging female talent in the rail sector.

Gregor sees it as essential to the industry’s future:

If we want a strong rail industry in 10, 20, 50 years, it starts with who we support today. These young women bring capability, ambition and perspective – and our job is to help them thrive.
Ahead of AusRAIL, the scholarship recipients will meet Ms Jacqui Walters, the Australian Government’s National Rail Manufacturing Advocate, who has taken a leadership role in driving national coordination, local manufacturing strategy and innovation across the sector.

Gregor describes her involvement as significant:

“Jacqui’s work is reshaping the sector. For the scholars to spend time with someone who’s influencing the national agenda – that’s a career-shaping moment.”

Partnership, policy and the future of manufacturing

The collaboration between industry, government and suppliers is something Gregor believes has never been more important.

“Rail manufacturing isn’t built by one organisation – it’s built by partnership. Government sets the direction, industry delivers capability and, together, we create a rail network that’s modern, reliable and proudly Australian.”

He notes that interest in local content and sovereign capability has never been stronger – and Comsteel is well positioned to contribute:

Being part of Molycop gives Comsteel the scale, investment and technical depth to keep building Australian capability well into the future.

“AusRAIL is where ideas become partnerships” Gregor says. “It’s our chance to show what Comsteel can do for operators, governments and project partners across Australia.

“Made in Australia — and made for the future. That’s what Comsteel stands for.”
