Over the past decade, demand for mental health and substance use services has increased across Kamloops’ Thompson Cariboo Shuswap region in Canada. As the tertiary care centre for more than 250,000 people, Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) faced growing pressure on emergency services. Patients requiring specialised mental health care were often treated in the general emergency department, an environment that can be overwhelming during highly vulnerable moments.
British Columbia’s Interior Health and Canada’s Ministry of Health prioritised the development of a dedicated Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) space. Planning for the MHSU began in 2018 as part of the RIH Foundation’s Together We Rise capital campaign.

A purpose built space for dignity and calm
Opened in September 2025, the new space’s calming colours, natural light and private consultation rooms promote dignity, comfort and healing for patients and their families. Safety and workflow features include a centralised care team station, controlled access points and comprehensive monitoring. Separating mental health care from the busy general emergency department enables a more integrated, patient centred approach while supporting staff wellbeing. Early feedback from patients, families and healthcare teams has been highly positive, with one family reporting that the environment felt calmer, safer and significantly more supportive than previous emergency department experiences.
Molycop’s contribution to community wellbeing
Reflecting Molycop’s commitment to investing in the health and well-being of the communities in which it operates, the company’s support contributes directly to mental health programs and resources at RIH, helping enhance patient care today and sustain services into the future. As part of this partnership, Molycop will be recognised on an acute treatment room within the Teck Emergency Department, reflecting a shared focus on delivering outcomes for Kamloops and surrounding communities. Heidi Coleman, CEO, Royal Inland Hospital Foundation said:We are deeply grateful for the generosity of Molycop, which helps strengthen mental health services, invest in critical resources, and create a more supportive environment for everyone who depends on accessible care at Royal Inland Hospital, and throughout our region. We look forward to continuing this valued partnership and working together to make an even greater impact in the years ahead!
Local insight and collaboration
The initiative was driven by Molycop’s team in Canada, who worked closely with the RIH Foundation from early engagement through to implementation to ensure the partnership aligns with community priorities and will deliver meaningful impact. Mental health affects every workplace and every community. Supporting the MHSU area at Royal Inland Hospital is about ensuring people in our community can access care that is respectful, compassionate, and tailored to their needs. This initiative is especially meaningful for our employees and their families, and we are proud to support a project that will make a lasting difference in Kamloops.
