Q&A with Zion, Benjamin and Riley
What inspired you to pursue a career in instrumentation and engineering?
Zion: I didn’t initially set out to pursue instrumentation and engineering. As a computer science major, I build apps and solve problems through code. But I also enjoyed working with hardware and IoT stuff, integrating hardware and software. When I got the chance to work with Molycop on my final project, I took it to try something new. Working with sensors and real-time data was enjoyable – it showed me how code and hardware can team up to make mining processes more efficient. I enjoyed the challenge and the impact, which got me excited about instrumentation and engineering.
How has your experience at Molycop helped shape your professional goals?
Benjamin: My experience at Molycop has helped shape my professional goals by giving me real-world experience, which has opened my eyes to a new industry in which my degree is able to help. This experience has motivated me to continue growing in my field and to pursue roles where I can contribute to meaningful, results-driven projects.
What has been the most exciting challenge you’ve worked on during your time with the MOBI project?
Riley: One of the most exciting challenges I've worked on was collaborating with both Highland Valley Copper and Molycop to find a solution that suited both companies. I found it particularly interesting to participate in internal decision-making meetings and hear the different perspectives that both parties have.
What advice would you give to other young graduates looking to break into the mining technology industry?
Zion: Jump in with an open mind and be ready to learn. Mining tech is changing fast, so try new things like data tools or sensors, like we use in the MOBI project. Look for hands-on work – Molycop let me tackle real projects early, which helped me grow. Ask questions and find mentors; they’ll guide you through tough spots. Also, think about how your work can improve things, like making mining more efficient or sustainable. That keeps you motivated and helps you stand out.
Where do you see yourself in five years, and how do you think Molycop can help you get there?
Benjamin: In five years, I hope to be in a stable and supportive work environment where I feel motivated to take on more responsibility and continue growing professionally. I also hope to start planning a family, so having a healthy work-life balance will be important. Molycop can support this by continuing to provide opportunities to work on meaningful projects, develop my skills and grow within the company.
What do you enjoy most about working as part of the Molycop team?
Riley: What I enjoy most is the open and supportive environment. I've always felt comfortable asking questions and seeking guidance when needed. I've appreciated being able to rely on my managers for insight when facing challenges.
